Flu Season News

Flu season is always a challenging one in the world of healthcare.  Well, not so much the actual flu and sick people, we know what to do to treat the illness.  It is the flu vaccine season that is hardest.

Every year we pre-order vaccines based on the last year’s numbers.  Then we try to plan some sort of reasonable time-frame for the vaccination of our patients.  That’s always hard because some years we have lots of vaccine by mid-September, then there are years that we don’t receive much of it until October and November.

This year was looking pretty good until the H1 N1 thing popped up.  That and the media pushing for everyone to get the seasonal flu vaccine asap.  The manufacturers reduced their seasonal flu vaccine output in order to get cranking on the H1N1 vaccine, so many health care providers have run out of, or are very short on seasonal flu vaccine.  Lake View Clinic in Two Harbors has flu vaccine for children 6 – 35 months old, but is out of seasonal flu vaccine for people age 36 months and older.  The manufacturers reassure us that they will ship the remainder of our order sometime in November.  In fact, that will be just fine as the seasonal flu doesn’t hit until February or March, sometimes April.

The H1N1 vaccine is already being shipped to some areas.  We should be receiving some in Lake County in the near future.  Initially, supplies will be very limited.  The vaccine will not be available in sufficient quantities to vaccinate the general public for a while yet.  Perhaps by the first half of November.   Stay tuned . . . . . . . .
